Snowshoeing or ski mountaineering at l'Estanyó Lake: Enjoy a nice day in the mountains

If you are a nature and adventure lover, the journey to Estany de l'Estanyó in the Sorteny Natural Park, just 10 minutes from Apartaments La Neu, will surprise you with its beauty and tranquility. This itinerary, perfect for doing with snowshoes or ski touring, will take you through some of the most impressive landscapes in the region, surrounded by high peaks, forests of pine and fir trees, and breathtaking views that will leave you speechless.

The route: A journey toward serenity.

The route starts at the Sorteny parking lot, heading toward one of the most beautiful spots in Andorra. If you choose to do it with snowshoes, the pace will be slower, allowing you to enjoy the mountain’s calmness and closely observe the local fauna and flora. On ski touring, the itinerary will be equally challenging and rewarding, with the sensation of sliding over fresh snow while circling the towering peaks.

The trail begins on a well-marked path (heading towards the Refugio de Sorteny), passing through a forest. The silence is only broken by the crunching of snow under your feet or skis, creating an atmosphere of peace and total disconnection. As you ascend, the landscape starts to open up, and you can see a high-mountain landscape stretching ahead of you.

Estany de l'Estanyó: A dreamy mountain lake

After about 3-4 hours of walking, depending on conditions and pace, you’ll reach Estany de l'Estanyó, a mountain lake that is pure magic. Surrounded by peaks over 2,500 meters, the lake seems embraced by nature, like a hidden refuge in the heart of the Natural Park. In winter, its surface freezes, offering a stunning winter scene.

Estany de l'Estanyó is not only a place for photography but also a paradise for wildlife lovers. It’s common to see alpine finches and golden eagles soaring overhead. Also, the flora in the area is very diverse, with species adapted to the harsh conditions of high mountain environments.

Curiosities of the Sorteny Natural Park

The Sorteny Natural Park, covering 1,000 hectares, is a biodiversity paradise, home to over 700 plant species, some of which are endemic. It’s also a key location for the conservation of many animal species. It’s not rare to spot mouflons, deer, especially in higher zones, and the park is also known for its crystal-clear rivers that feed many of the lakes in the area, including the Estany de l'Estanyó.

The history of this area is also fascinating. The name "Estanyó" comes from the Catalan word for "small lake" (estany), and refers to the fact that although the lake isn’t large, its beauty and location make it a true hidden gem in the heart of the Pyrenees.
